I'm sure if you ask ten authors process of writing a children's book that will give ten different answers. Writing is like a personal adventure to me difficult to imagine two writers who have an identical writing process. There are a number of formulas for the process of writing and most of them include creating a first draft.
I tried both formula scheme and seat-of-the-pants formula. Comparing the two, I think the formula schema offers more support. With this method, you know where he goes and knows what is around the corner. This, to me, gives a sense of security that the seat-of-your-pants method. I have written two children's stories based on ancient Chinese stories. For these two particular stories, I had a co-author who provided an outline of each story. I used scheme to construct a story. With this process know how the ship begins to melt in the middle, and end in the middle because I have the steps in place. Even when change relevant aspects of history, like adding a character, or even the basic structure a bit, I still have a rough roadmap to help me get my destination.
My stories of others, including two picture books and an average degree of short history, have been created with the seat back-the-pants method. While I think the method a little more comfortable and easier, there is a sense of the unknown and adventure in the passenger-the-pants method. I have an idea and start writing. It's amazing to be looking at a blank screen word processing and then have one or two sentences that automatically takes you to another sentence or two, then another and another. To witness the creation of characters, personalities and even worlds born of her imagination is exciting.
